5 Things To Reduce Your Carbon Footprint

We all feel the need to do or get involved in something bigger than ourselves at one point or another. This is only normal and can increase one’s level of fulfillment. While there are numerous things you can do, few beat doing your part to preserve the planet. If saving the planet sounds ideal, reducing your carbon footprint is a great place to start.

Here are five simple things you can do to live more sustainably.

1. Drive Less

By leaving your car at home, you will be making an easy but impactful decision nonetheless. Each time you drive, you contribute to carbon emissions being released into the environment.

Granted, you have to get around. Walking is great for short distances. For longer distances, you can opt for public transportation or cycling. If you are around Montreal, try the public bicycle sharing system. This offers a cleaner, efficient way to get around.

2. Reduce Meat Intake

Agribusiness produces more greenhouse gas emissions than fossil fuels. Yet, most people assume the reverse is true.

Cutting out meat from your diet or reducing your intake makes a huge difference. Red meat is particularly damaging to the environment. Daily livestock rearing consumes 11 times more water and emits five times more harmful gases than poultry farming.

Looking at it this way gives you several options; you do not have to eliminate red meat from your diet entirely. Instead, you can reduce your intake or forgo red meat for white meat.

3. Plant A Garden

Whether you live in an apartment block or a house, planting some greenery is a quick way to reduce your carbon footprint. Plants absorb carbon dioxide, which is great for humans and the planet.

If you have some idle land on your property, try planting trees and shrubbery on as much of it as you can. If you want to landscape your garden, you can call on a landscaper. As it can be expensive to call upon a person specialized in exterior design, you can opt for bad credit loans online to get the money you need and reduce your carbon footprint. This is great for the environment and your property’s value as well.

If you live in an apartment block, look up ideal plants that can thrive on your balcony. Cities specifically need to minimize the urban heat effect more than rural areas. Having a few plants out on your balcony can help with this.

4. Line-Dry Laundry

This might not be possibly year-round, but it is a great idea for spring and summer. A single dryer load uses five times more electricity than washing. Line drying your clothes can save as much as 1/3 of their carbon footprint.

Similarly, shop for appliances with high-energy efficiency ratings. These are often more modern and use up far less energy than their counterparts.

5. Shop Organic

We purchase a lot of items from foodstuffs to makeup and toiletries. While we have favorite brands for a reason, not all manufactured items are great for the environment.

Have this in mind when shopping. A simple way to go about this is by identifying an all-organic store in your neighborhood. It becomes much easier to shop there as you know all items stocked will be organic.
