Is it safe to use a dental scaler at home?

A lot of people are concerned with the state of their teeth, I mean, who doesn’t want to have pearly white teeth? Oral health care manufacturers have observed that trend among people that’s why they introduce dental instruments yearly into the consumer market in a bid to promote the DIY (do-it-yourself) approach. Because of that, there are a lot of dental consumer products in the market today, while some are safe to use at home others aren’t.

One of the popular dental instruments you can find in the consumer market today is the dental scaler. It falls into the line of products produced by oral health care companies to foster the DIY approach. The question now is “is it safe to use a dental scaler at home?” To answer the question, continue reading. By the end of this article, you’ll be able to tell if it’s safe or not.

What is a dental scaler?

A dental scaler (also known as a plaque scrapper) is a handheld device that has a curved blade or hook. It is used to remove or scrape away tartar or plaque from the teeth.

How do they work?

When plaque builds on the teeth over time, it can harden up into what is known as dental tartar. If it is not treated, it can lead to tooth decay and gum diseases.

Knowing how harmful or detrimental plaque build-up can be to your health that’s why it’s important to always remove plaque and to reduce its build-up on the teeth. In order to remove plaque from the teeth, certain tools are used and the tools used are ultrasonic instruments that have sharp points. Dental hygienists can use those ultrasonic instruments to remove or scrape all the tartar and plaque found on the teeth surface and beneath your gumline.

Can I safely use a dental scaler at home?

The answer is no, it’s not safe to use a dental scaler at home by yourself. Why? It’s because the dental hygienists who carry out the process of removing plaque and tartar from your teeth have been extensively trained in dental scaling and periodontal debridement and as such, they know how to successfully remove tartar and plaque from your teeth and also where to look for plaque and tartar on your teeth.

Watching your dentist do it might actually make the process look simple but it’s not. You cannot easily do it by yourself at home and if you make a wrong move, the results will be harmful.

Dangers of using dental scalers at home

Since we now know that dental scalers are specialized medical tools that can be properly used by dental hygienists because it requires a lot of training before one will be able to use them safely. Doing it yourself without adequate training can lead to the following problems:

Damage your gum tissue

It can cause infection

If the dental scalers are not properly used, it could result in infection. How? If you mistakenly push tartar under the gum line, it can lead to infection and other gum issues.
