Getting To Know Some Basic Concepts Of Multiplication

Multiplication is one of the arithmetic operations in mathematics that is used to calculate the product of two or more values. The values can be integers, fractions, decimals, real numbers, natural numbers, or whole numbers. In real life, we come across several applications of multiplication. Through this article, we will learn about the meaning, symbol, formula, and properties of multiplication.

What do you mean by Multiplication?

In mathematics, multiplication is defined as the process of computing the product of two or more than two numbers. For example, there are two numbers, ‘a’ and ‘b’, the multiplication of these two numbers is stated as ‘a’ multiplied by ‘b’. Multiplication in maths is also described as repeated addition.

What is the symbol of Multiplication?

The cross sign (×) is used to denote the symbol of multiplication. For example,

  • 2 × 5 = 10
  • 3 × 6 = 18
  • 2 × 4 × 3 = 24

What is the Formula of Multiplication?

In mathematics, below-given is the formula of multiplication:

Multiplier × Multiplicand = Product

  • The multiplicand is defined as the total number of observations in each given group.
  • The multiplier is defined as the total number of given equal groups.
  • Product is defined as the result computed by multiplying the multiplier and multiplicand.

For example, if the given multiplier is 3 and multiplicand is 4, then the product computed will be:

Product = 3 × 4 = 12

What are the Properties of Multiplication?

The below-mentioned are some basic properties of multiplication:

  • Closure Property of Multiplication: This property of multiplication states that:
    • If two given numbers are integers, then their product will also be an integer. For example, (-2 × 3 = -6)
    • If two given numbers are in fractional form, then their product will be either a fraction or a whole number. For example, (1/4 × 4 = 1)
  • Commutative Property of Multiplication: This property of multiplication states that if given two numbers are integers, say A and B then:

A × B = B × A

For example, 3 × 4 = 4 × 3 = 12

  • Associative Property of Multiplication: This property of multiplication states that if given three numbers are integers, say A, B, and C then:

A × (B × C) = (A × B) × C

For example, 3 × (4 × 5) = (3 × 4) × 5 = 60

  • Distributive Property of Multiplication: This property of multiplication states that if given three numbers are integers, say A, B, and C then:

A × (B + C) = (A × B) + (A × C)

For example, 3 × (4 + 5) = (3 × 4) + (3 × 5) = 27

  • Identity Property of Multiplication: According to this particular multiplication property, when any number is multiplied by 1, then the computed value of the given number remains unchanged.

A × 1 = A

For example, 3 × 1 = 3

  • Zero Property of Multiplication: According to this particular multiplication property, when any number is multiplied by 0, then the computed value of the given number is zero.

A × 0 = A

For example, 3 × 0 = 0
