How Do You Fix A Broken Cable On A Garage Door?

If you’ve ever seen a garage door in action, you know that there are two main cables that do the heavy lifting. These cables are attached to the springs on either side of the door and run all the way to the top. When the door is raised, the cables wind up, and when it’s lowered, the cables release, providing the power to move the door. Over time, these cables can start to fray and even break, which can cause serious problems. If you find yourself with a broken cable, don’t panic. With a little know-how and the right tools, you can replace the cable yourself in no time. Alternatively, you could opt to get quality garage door repair available at Chicago Garage Door. But first;

Why Do Garage Door Cables Break?

There are a few reasons why garage door cables might break. One of the most common reasons is wear and tear. Over time, the cables can become brittle and snap. Garage door cables may break due to improper installation or maintenance or sudden impact or stress. If something hits the door hard enough, it can cause the cables to snap. Or, if the door is opened too quickly, the sudden force can also break the cables.

Signs That My Garage Door Cables Need Replacement?

If you suspect that your garage door cables may be failing, there are a few things to look for. One of the most obvious is fraying or kinking in the cables. If you see any damage to the cable’s outer casing, it’s time for a replacement. Another sign that your cables need attention is if they’re starting to rust. Rusty cables are a danger to both you and your garage door as they can easily snap under strain. If you notice any of these warning signs, don’t wait – have your cables replaced right away.

Tools Needed To Fix A Garage Door Cable

If you’ve decided to replace your garage door cable yourself, there are a few things you’ll need. First, you’ll need a ladder tall enough to reach the top of the door. You’ll also need a socket wrench, safety goggles, safety gloves, replacement cones and some replacement cables. Make sure to get the right size cables – if they’re too small, they won’t be able to support the weight of the door, and if they’re too large, they won’t fit in the pulleys. Once you have all of your supplies, you’re ready to get started.

Steps For Garage Door Cable Repair

1. First, disconnect the garage door from the opener by pulling on the emergency release handle. This will ensure that the door can’t move while you’re working on it.

2. Next, use your socket wrench to loosen the bolts that hold the spring cones in place. These are usually located at the top of the door, near the springs.

3. Once the bolts are loose, remove the cones and set them aside.

4. Now it’s time to remove the old cables. Loosen the screws on the cable drum and pull the cables out of the drum.

5. If you’re replacing just one cable, measure it and cut a new length of cable with your wire cutters. If you’re replacing both cables, cut two new lengths of cable.

6. Strip about 1/2 inch of insulation from the end of each cable and twist the strands of wire together to form a solid connector.

7. Attach the connector to one of the new cables and do the same for the other cable.

8. Pull the new cables through the guides and pulleys, and attach them to the cable drums. Ensure that the cables are tight on the drums – if they’re too loose, they can come off during operation and cause serious injury.

9. Once the cables are securely in place, replace the cones and tighten the bolts with your socket wrench.

10. Reconnect the garage door to the opener and test it out.

Garage door cables are a vital part of the door’s operation, and they need to be in good condition to ensure that the door works properly. If you think that your cables may be damaged, don’t wait to have them replaced. Replacing them is a relatively simple process, but it’s one that should be done by a professional. Professional garage door repairmen have the experience and the tools to properly replace garage door cables, so you can rest assured that the job will be done right.
