Whether your business is a large one that uses generators a lot, or it’s a small one that needs a generator occasionally, you will need a drip tray or two to make sure you protect the environment from spills and leaks. There are three main types of oil drip trays to choose from depending on your budget and needs.
- Basic Drip Tray
Basic oil drip trays for plant are very easy and self-explanatory to use. They are simply a tough plastic tray to position under your generator to collect any oil or fuel spills.
PRO: The benefits of using a basic tray are that it is easy to use, cost effective and comes in a variety of sizes to suit your needs.
CON: The downside is that if you are using it outside, in rainy weather the water can mix with the oil or fuel and overflow into the soil. If anything like this happens you must report it to your local authority. As the main benefit of the drip tray is that it helps to protect the environment from oil spills, this type of tray isn’t really very useful in wet weather.
- Plant Nappy
The Plant Nappy is an innovative solution that is easy to set up on all types of machinery. The Plant Nappy products are oil absorbent so they trap the oil in the side wall and base layer. They also allow water to flow through the walls and sides whilst trapping the oil, so they are great in wet weather.
PRO: A Plant Nappy is hydrophobic so it retains oils and fuel but lets water flow away. It is also resistant to UV rays and is fire resistant.
CON: It is one of the costlier options on the market. If you are on a tighter budget this may not be the best option for you. It is also restricted in size as it does not come in a larger size for bigger machinery.
The spilltector is a more affordable option then the Plant Nappy, though still significantly more costly than a basic tray. It features an absorbent laminate tray that consists of four layers:
- Base layer – hydrophobic oil and fuel absorbent pads
- Evo layer – burst fibre cotton technology for oil retention
- Hydrophobic layer – resists rainwater and only retains oil and fuel
- Top layer – tough plastic mesh grid that prevents damage from machinery
PRO: It combines the best features of a basic tray and the Plant Nappy. The Spilltector is reusable and long-lasting but the mat needs to be replaced when soiled.
CON: You need to have a stock of the absorbent mats and replace them. The Spilltector will not work without the laminate trays so you may need to have a few backups.
