Is CBD an effective treatment for anxiety? Learn more

Products containing cannabidiol (CBD) are increasingly becoming popular. CBD is a cannabinoid, a substance present in cannabis and hemp plants, and has been shown to offer a variety of health advantages. For example, CBD anti anxiety gummies are used to get relief from anxiety, depression, pain, inflammation, and improving sleep.

While professionals are still researching CBD’s qualities, many people take CBD Capsules for anxiety reduction. CBD is non-intoxicating, therefore it won’t make you feel euphoric. It’s also not a habit-forming substance. As a result, many people feel at ease with utilizing it to alleviate anxiety disorders’ symptoms. CBD is often confused with cannabis and cannabis products, but there is a clear differentiation. THC is a chemical found in cannabis prohibited at the federal level but legal in some states. Some states, like Arkansas, also require a medical prescription for the consumption of cannabis. Thankfully there are resources available now on how to get a medical marijuana card in Arkansas and other appropriate states.

Does CBD help with anxiety?

Many people believe that CBD can assist with anxiety, but what evidence do we have?

There is research on CBD’s effects on patients with social anxiety disorder. In a 2010 study, 10 persons with social anxiety disorder were given either 400 milligrams of CBD or a placebo to see how CBD affected them. Anxiety levels were lower in the CBD-treated subjects.

Participants in a 2018 study conducted by Trusted Source were given either CBD or a placebo before doing a public speaking test. People who took 300 milligrams of CBD before the test experience fewer anxiety symptoms. Those who took a placebo, 150 milligrams of CBD, or 600 milligrams of CBD, on the other hand, did not appear to have less anxiety. It’s worth mentioning that this study excluded persons who suffer from anxiety disorders (or other mental health conditions). It focused on anxiety as a symptom rather than a disease.

Anxiety and sleeplessness are frequently linked. Professionals studied CBD’s effects on patients suffering from anxiety and insomnia. Nearly 4 out of 5 participants experienced reduced anxiety, and there was sleep improvement in almost 2 out of every three people. This implies that CBD could help with both anxieties and sleep concerns. Finally, much research on CBD and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which can produce anxiety symptoms, was examined in a literature review.

CBD helps patients with PTSD symptoms, but more research is needed to establish a firm base. According to the study, CBD has fewer adverse effects than medicine widely used to treat PTSD.

So, while there is promising research on CBD and anxiety, it is also limited. The research described above is too small to provide a conclusion on whether CBD can aid anxiety. It’s still unclear why CBD appears to affect mood. However, serotonin could play a role. Our bodies create serotonin, which is a hormone. Depression and anxiety are linked to low serotonin levels. Our eating and sleeping habits are also influenced by serotonin. It’s thought that CBD interacts with serotonin, which could explain why it has an anti-anxiety effect.

What is the ideal way to use CBD for anxiety?

There are a few different CBD options if you want to take it for anxiety. CBD is available in the following forms:

  • tinctures and oils
  • foodstuffs (including gummies, chocolates, and savory snacks)
  • vaporizer
  • CBD hemp flower that you can smoke
  • beverages
  • Topicals (such as creams, lotions, and body oils)

When you use a CBD topical, little to no CBD is absorbed into your bloodstream. Therefore it’s not an excellent way to treat an internal problem like anxiety. Topicals containing CBD are to treat pain, inflammation, and skin disorders such as acne.

The CBD used in most of the research above was given orally, either in the form of CBD oil or capsules. There is no conclusive proof that one method is inherently superior to the other.

How much CBD do I need to treat anxiety?

There is no widely suggested dosage for CBD, as most scientists and physicians will readily admit. There has been no large-scale clinical research to advise dosage guidelines so far. Furthermore, the FDA is still studying more about CBD, such as its long-term effects on the body, before deciding how to regulate it.

This isn’t to say that CBD isn’t safe. Based on existing data, it looks to be a safe and well-tolerated medication. If you’re interested in experimenting with CBD to help with anxiety symptoms, make sure you do it with caution and knowledge. Some dosage considerations are listed below.

General dosing tips

When deciding on a CBD dose, there are a few things to think about:

  • Body mass index
  • Metabolic rate
  • CBD concentration
  • The degree to which your anxiousness is severe

Each product’s CBD content varies, but it’s commonly expressed in milligrams (mg) per container.

You can use a dosage calculator or an app to help you find your optimum dose once you know the CBD product’s potency. Dosage calculations can give you a milligram recommendation based on your weight and the severity of your symptoms.

The way you react to CBD is also influenced by your body chemistry. Some people metabolize drugs more quickly than others, which could be due to genetics or lifestyle. If you know you metabolize medications rapidly, you might be able to benefit from a higher dose.

How well does CBD work compare to other anxiety treatments?

It’s difficult to say as compared to therapy and anti-anxiety drugs, the evidence that CBD can help with anxiety is minimal. Still, there hasn’t been nearly enough research comparing CBD to other anxiety medicines, so we don’t know for sure.

When used as a supplemental treatment, there is some evidence that CBD can aid with anxiety symptoms. For example, in one case study, CBD was reported to assist an autistic person with anxiety by reducing some symptoms.

Risks and side effects of consuming CBD for anxiety

CBD is safe for human consumption. However, some persons may encounter the following adverse effects: Diarrhoea, weight loss or gain, exhaustion, nausea, and vomiting.

As the review mentioned above points out, there is no evidence that CBD can worsen anxiety or similar symptoms. When you notice that your anxiety levels rise while you use CBD, you should consult your doctor.

It’s crucial to remember that CBD can interact with several drugs, especially those that come with a grapefruit warning. Grapefruit and CBD both affect liver enzymes. This implies that certain medications will be processed differently by your liver, resulting in adverse effects.

Conclusion

Suppose you’re still unsure if CBD is suitable for you and you reside in a state where you may safely talk to a health professional about it. Some cannabis pharmacies also have medical professionals on staff who can offer appropriate advice and dose recommendations.
